Arnold M. Cooper, MD, 2009

Dr. Cooper is the Stephen P. Tobin and Dr. Arnold M. Cooper Professor Emeritus in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College, and a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at Columbia Psychoanalytic Center. He has been Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, Associate Director of the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center, and Adjunct Professor of Literature at Columbia. He has served as President of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Vice President of the International Psychoanalytical Association, North American Editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry. He is the recipient of numerous awards for teaching, scholarship and leadership.

Dr Cooper has written over one hundred journal articles, book chapters, and book reviews. He has had a special interest in issues of narcissism and masochism. His most recent books are “The Quiet Revolution in American Psychoanalysis: Selected Papers of Arnold M. Cooper,” edited by Elizabeth L. Auchincloss, (2005) and “Contemporary Psychoanalysis in America: Leading Analysts Present their Work” edited by Dr. Cooper, (2006). He is co-editor of the “Textbook of Psychoanalysis” with Ethel S. Person and Glen O. Gabbard, ( 2005) and co-editor of “Psychoanalysis on the Move; The Work of Joseph Sandler” with Peter Fonagy and Robert Wallerstein (1999).
